Seaside Memories

Ah the bliss of walking barefoot after a long winter! Today I have been exploring St Andrews by the coast and one of the highlights of the day was sinking my bare feet into the soft white sand at the beach. The smells and sounds of the seaside bring back so many memories for me. The sound of the seagulls. The salty smell of the ocean. The little fish n chip shop by the beach. It takes me back to my childhood, growing up by the beach in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.

Oh, the ocean makes me long for New Zealand more than ever! I can’t believe it has been over 8 years since I left. Time flies so fast. On days like this it suddenly becomes so clear to me how much I miss Aotearoa. I have many homes on this earth and am used to moving around. I love living in Sweden. I love the winter, the forests and mountains of the north. But New Zealand raised me and will always be a part of my roots. And so I stand with my roots on both sides of the earth…

But for now I am here in Scotland and today has been a wonderful day of exploring the old town of St. Andrews. Nice with a day off from studying, writing and sitting at the computer. Time to just wander. Walk. Drink coffee. Soak up the sun. Watch. Listen…

I love travelling alone. The freedom of being able to follow my own two feet wherever they wish to lead me. Doing things in my own pace. When I go to a place where I have never been before then I often go for a walkabout first and see where my feet wish to go. Walking without any plan and simply going with my curiosity. “I wonder what’s down that street?” I love finding odd places. Hidden sanctuaries. I especially love looking for cosy cafes… I will actually go on quite the cafĂ© hunt, sometimes walking for hours all over the place in search of something unique, cosy and with that homemade, good-quality and creative touch… I am very fussy when it comes to coffee and cafes! It is not often I find places I really love but when I do it makes me so happy… oh and I especially love finding writer-friendly cafes!

Ah the joy of travelling and being free as the wind…
